Anolis at The Australian Museum

Twenty Anolis ArcPad 48 RGBW LED fixtures have been installed in the retail and café areas of the iconic Australian Museum in Sydney, as part of an innovative, energy efficient new lighting scheme designed by Mark Hammer.

This brings an inviting ambience to this important area in one of Australia’s most famous historical landmarks. The lighting equipment was supplied by Sydney based Creative Lighting and Audio, with the Anolis elements sourced from the brand’s Australian distributors, the ULA Group.

The Australian Museum is the oldest museum in Australia, with an international reputation in the fields of natural history and anthropology. It is one of Sydney’s leading cultural attractions offering several first class permanent exhibitions plus an ever changing programme of special exhibitions and events.

The café area is located adjacent to the main entrance. In daytime, it offers a quiet relaxing space for tourists to enjoy refreshments, while in the evenings, it is transformed into a stylish event space, utilised for corporate functions, weddings, cocktail parties and gala dinners.

The new lighting scheme needed to be flexible enough to create a warm cozy atmosphere during quieter times and be fully functional for use during the events.

With the building’s heritage significance, it also needed to blend as unobtrusively as possible into the surrounding architecture and existing interior surface treatments explains Creative Lighting & Audio’s Andre Kecskes, adding, “Additionally, the client required eco-efficient fixtures offering good sustainability, with safe and easy access for maintenance”. There were also power limitations that – obviously - could not be exceeded.

All these were primary factors making the Anolis ArcPad 48 fixtures an ideal choice for the project.

“Their size, shape and streamlined design were also important in maintaining the overall  aesthetics of the space”, adds Andre.

The new lighting system is interfaced via an Anolis ArcControl 1024 wall panel, offering easy and intuitive control, with a series of pre-programmed timed lighting sequences that seamlessly integrate with the environment.
