Cleveland House – Bath

Enlightened were commissioned by the developers of Cleveland House to provide lighting for the canal tunnel beneath their building, that would not only make the passage safer but enhance the tunnels atmosphere. They also wanted to be able to control the installed lighting to showcase the tunnels unique character during celebratory events and on special occasions.

We felt privileged to be asked to provide a lighting design for this historic but underappreciated space and wanted to aid rediscovery of its simple industrial beauty. We chose to best showcase the tunnel’s vault with a lighting choice that allowed a daily lighting state of elegant white but also made use of the latest in LED technology. It was crucial that the installation was as low impact and non invasive as possible with a clean and unobtrusive visibility profile when not in use.

Due to the tunnels being in constant use by the general public these required installation in a secure and safe position along the tunnels length. By mounting them in an out of reach, elevated position along the tunnels roof and as close to one side as possible allowed us to wash two thirds of the tunnels arch in a curtain of controlled programmable light that could due to its robust design and low power consumption be used continuously with minimum maintenance for daily utility lighting or as a stunning light installation with the ability to transform what was once a dark and forbidding space into a stunning display of vivid colour washes and chases.

To meet these requirements we chose Anolis, ArcLine Outdoor 20MC as they provide excellent coverage whilst allowing full remote programmable control over the lighting colour and temperature through their full RGBNW, LED components.

We have used these brilliant units on some of our favourite installations and knew their choice would be transformative. The Anolis Arcline have an elegant slim profile which allowed a non-intrusive footprint sympathetic to the tunnels heritage.

Their low energy and long-lived LED fixtures allow full control of the installation and also the ability to recall favoured lighting states and even cascade a palette of rich colour along the tunnels length.

The lighting design attracted a huge amount of interest from the towpath’s passers-by during installation. With many regular tunnel users very enthusiastic and complimentary of the lighting’s striking effect.

We have extensive experience lighting historic buildings of national importance and have lit many of Bath's most iconic sites, including Bath Abbey, Pulteney Bridge, Abbey Hotel and St Stephens Church Lansdown. We are passionate about what we do and take very seriously the responsibility and privilege of working on architecturally important structures. We believe that sensitive and respectful lighting can revitalise and enhance appreciation for a buildings beauty and at night bring to life structures that would otherwise remain hidden.  As a proud local company we are always delighted to show the city at it's very best.

Reasons for using Anolis luminaires
•    Premium quality both for build and light output
•    Proven record with Enlightened - Church exterior fitting have been running for ten years with no problem
•    Discreet elegant profile
•    Cost effective for qty of fittings to produce effect I wanted - first design proved to be over budget so re designed using bare number of lights which proved to deliver more than sufficient impact
•    Control giving scenes / chases etc.

17 pieces of Anolis ArcLine Outdoor 20MC RGBNW non-optical linear luminaires were used above the public footpath the Grade Listed tunnel. The chosen luminaires has to be sympathetic to the tunnels heritage which is why Enlightened Lighting were the designers and installer, selected the ArcLine range for their low profile, non-intrusive footprint and performance that would not only make the tunnel safer but enhance the tunnels atmosphere.

Powered and controlled remotely by the ArcPower 384 Rackmount, and a single ArcPower 36 allowed for easy installation of the low voltage cable infrastructure adhering to the strict restrictions of planning.
